I visited KASHIMAJIMA Island in Karatsu on the same day as a day trip. From a guesthouse in Itoshima, Fukuoka.

Japan has multiple inhabited islands sharing the name Takashima. For identification purposes, my blog and MAHARAJIMA will refer to them as Saga Takashima and Karatsu Takashima.

高島↔唐津定期航路 渡船待合所:Takashima ↔ Karatsu Regular Ferry Route Ferry Waiting Area
At first, I mistakenly thought another port closer to Takashima than this one was the departure point. I realized it the day before.
The port below, Karatsu East Port, is the port for Iki Island in Nagasaki Prefecture. The ferry shown in the thumbnail is heading toward this port.

塩屋神社:Shioya Shrine
To prevent wild boar from entering, the gate is opened each time.
On the island, some doors are rusty and stiff, but this one moved smoothly. It was a charming shrine. Visiting after sunset feels too intense and overwhelming (it has a powerful presence). I went during the day.
It’s located at the top of a slope, but it’s not a distance that will leave you breathless.
The recommended order is to visit this shrine first, followed by Hōtō Shrine.
宝当神社:Houtou Shrine
When it comes to lottery tickets alone, results are everything, so my personal assessment of this shrine’s financial benefits is close to zero.
After visiting, I stopped winning the toto lottery. It looks like I’ll finish 2024 this way. I used to win before that.
→Update. As of June 2025, unbelievably, I still haven’t won the toto once. Give me back my toto luck. My luck has been stolen for years.
The remains?! Sorry, but I’m not really into places connected to corpses…
So that’s why Shioya Shrine had more atmosphere (though it seemed full of animal spirits over there).

There’s not much shade, so heatstroke is a real risk.
