Even if the prison still existed today, I wouldn’t go there for an interview if it meant serving time.
By the way, Singapore’s prison is located in the Changi area.
This website is MAHARAJIMA, an international island manga where inhabited islands take center stage.
Senang Island/Pulau Senang
・This area is primarily monitored by the Singapore Navy and police.
・Uninhabited island. Currently used as a live-fire military training range by the Singapore Armed Forces.
・Access is prohibited.
The 1963 prison riot that unfolded like a movie, resulting in the murder of the warden and three others
In 1960, an experimental prison was established on this island.
“You may move freely within the island. However, you will be engaged in physical labor.”
“Through rigorous labor, the inmates will be rehabilitated. They will gain the ability to legally reintegrate into society.”
This promise would be betrayed.
Originally, this prison had only about ten prison staff. In contrast, there were fifty inmates.
The warden was Daniel Dutton, born in Ireland.
“Alright, this can work.” Within just three years, Daniel expanded the facility to house 320 inmates from the original 50.
In 1963, over 70 prisoners rioted. They set fire to buildings and attacked staff with knives and bottles. Four people, including the warden, were killed.
In 1965, 18 individuals involved in the riot were hanged. The remaining 59 received prison sentences for minor offenses or were acquitted.
This riot led to the prison’s closure after only three years of operation.
We sincerely pray for the repose of the souls of Daniel and the other three.
Pulau Senang (Senang Island) means “Happy Island” in Malay.
How ironic…
