Foreign visitors can join tours of the world’s rare “female-only breeding facility”
This is a national project in Singapore, but photography was permitted inside the building. Visits require advance reservations. All explanations are in English.

The bus stop is a one-minute walk from the factory.
Questions from Singaporean elementary school students came thick and fast right from the start. It felt like watching an open class.
My impression was that about 60% of participants were Chinese, 30% Indian, and the rest other ethnicities. Around 40 visitors in total.
The Chinese kid in the front row was stuffing his face with snacks, dropping them on the floor—bad manners while attending. His mother didn’t say a word. In Japan, he’d get scolded, but apparently it’s okay in Singapore. This is a science-focused factory, you know.

I think part of the reason people with developmental disabilities feel less constrained overseas than in Japan lies in this kind of tolerance.

The National Project: Wolbachia
A project undertaken by the Singaporean government to reduce dengue fever infection rates. The microorganism “Wolbachia,” which coexists with insects, infects mosquitoes and manipulates their reproductive systems—such as switching the host’s sex from male to female. This factory produces mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia and releases them in Singapore. The mechanism involves mating these mosquitoes with wild mosquitoes to prevent them from producing offspring. Even after hearing this explanation, the elementary school kids kept chanting “poison” over and over, seemingly intent on embarrassing the host.

Pass through this passageway; the bus stop is on the right and across from it. Wait at the entrance to Building 5008 and call for the facility staff.
Enter Building 5008
Photography permitted. No explanation was given for the selection, but four areas—Yishun, Tampines, Choa Chu Kang, and Bukit Batok—were monitored.
Improvements were observed in all areas. These four areas were residential zones at risk for dengue fever transmission…

The eggs are stored in the hallway, and once they hatch, the chicks are kept indoors.
There are two ways to participate.
1) Direct booking (company website) 2) Bus tour (Option 1 was closer to my home, but I chose Option 2 this time)

Recommended is 1. The bus tour got delayed because the driver got lost, and we ended up just sitting in the bus for 30 minutes. Plus, the tour guide showed up 14 minutes late for the meeting time!

Even though she was 14 minutes late, no one blamed her. In the end, they applauded her and the tour ended. Seriously? Singapore is known as the world’s most complaint-happy country, yet this is nothing like that. Some people with ADHD in Japan are careful to avoid being late in their daily lives.
