This is an inhabited island where I stayed for two nights and three days while researching manga on Maharajima.
The islanders were incredibly kind to me. By fortunate timing, I also met someone who returns from Fukuoka about once a month, and I was able to hear many stories from them.

【Resident Basic Register Information as of August 6, 2025】 Registered residents: 49 ・The origin of the name has yet to be documented. 【Island Features】 ・An island where many men practice free diving for fishing, known as “Ama fishing” ・It is said that when the Sō clan, the feudal lords of Tsushima, were shipwrecked during their mandatory rotation to Edo, the islanders of Matsushima rescued them. As a token of gratitude, the Sō clan bestowed the surname “Sō” upon the islanders. Kindergarteners and elementary school children commute to Kakarajima by school boat.

・It is home to the only saltworks in Karatsu. ・Tours are possible but subject to timing and circumstances. Advance inquiry is required. ・Generally, seawater is drawn the day before the new moon and full moon, with boiling commencing around 7 a.m. on the day of the new moon and full moon.

Payment for both the outbound and return trips was made upon boarding. Return boarding passes are not distributed. They apparently remember passengers’ faces. Even for boarding the next day. Receipts are available upon request.
