【Resident Basic Register Information as of August 6, 2025】 Registered residents: 255 【Origin of the Island】 No specific information can be found on the internet. 【Island Features】 ・The surrounding area features scenic beauty such as sea-eroded rock formations and cliffs, designated as part of Saikai National Park. ・During the Edo period, like Enoshima to the east, it was part of the Omura domain and served as one of its whaling bases. ・Fishing is the main industry. ・In March 2024, Hirashima Elementary and Junior High School closed due to insufficient enrollment. The remaining students did not transfer to neighboring Enoshima (as commuting daily was impossible), but instead moved their families to Sasebo City (Ira interviewed school officials locally).
・There is a 200-year-old tradition called Hyakumanben. Islanders bring ropes to twist together into a giant rope measuring 30 meters long. Chanting “Namaido,” they lift it and parade it around the entire island. This tradition originates from a tragic love story where a monk from the island and the daughter of a village headman drowned themselves in the sea. It serves to pray for the repose of their souls and the island’s safety. It takes place every year in mid-July, and children are not allowed to swim in the sea until the event is over. Why is it that adults can swim?
