Originally spelled “Kashima,” it was changed to “Kashima” to avoid confusion with Kashima in Nagasaki City. Whether this was due to the islanders’ reserved nature or some other consideration remains unclear. 【Island Features】 The island is believed to have been inhabited for thousands of years, as evidenced by the discovery of Jomon pottery.
