What is Echizen crab(越前がに)?

Echizen crab is known as the top brand among Japanese snow crabs, referring specifically to male snow crabs landed in Fukui Prefecture.

Storefront

It looked like a crab with a broken leg, but it was movable. This is the most famous restaurant for Echizen crab in the area. We went without a reservation and got a seat on the first floor.

Four dishes came to about 10,000 yen.

The Echizen Red Snow Crab Season Opening Fair 2025 runs from Saturday, September 13 to Monday, November 3, 2025. Echizen Town’s red snow crab is renowned among fishing industry professionals for its rigorous quality control. Perfect for those eager to enjoy it before winter arrives.
The Echizen crab season typically opens around November each year.
Staying around mid-November allows you to savor both.

The genuine Echizen crab is marked with a yellow tag as proof.

This time I ate Echizen crab, not Echizen red snow crab.

The locals in Toyama told me:

“Tourists go to restaurants to eat crab, but we usually buy it cheap at the supermarket and eat it at home.”

If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, that’s not impossible, but it wasn’t feasible for me this time.

KUCHINOSHIMA

Boiling and cutting crabs might be a bit tricky for busy tourists. So Ira decided to leave it to the crab pros and headed straight for a famous crab restaurant. The inn owner drove us there.

I hear it costs around ¥5,000 per cup when purchased at a supermarket in Toyama.

Eating crab in Kanazawa during winter might be cheaper. I’ve eaten crab in Kanazawa during winter before.

Anyway, since I came all the way to Toyama, I decided to treat myself to some Echizen crab alone.

The crab rice dumpling was ¥1,680 for this size. Since I’d never tried it before, I went ahead and ordered it.

The Seiko crab gratin was ¥1,430.

Eating crab in Malaysia costs less than a quarter of that price. The crab variety and cooking method are different, though.

I ordered the sweet shrimp rice bowl as a change of pace.

The soup had hardly any broth—it was mostly seaweed. I never imagined there’d be so little broth.

I should have just ordered crab straight up instead of going for the fancy stuff.

I’m not used to eating sweet shrimp, and my stomach got tired halfway through.

Too much sweet shrimp for me. Even sharing it would have been plenty.

I rarely order course meals when traveling alone.

I don’t eat much, so I often leave food uneaten. I need someone to accompany me.

The price of crab here also seems to be rising every year, so please check the latest information before visiting. This applies not only to this article.

Inside the store/Scene

Trains pass right in front of you. For rail fans, this is a double treat. Maybe because it was a weekday, there weren’t many other customers that day. The shop was quiet. Occasionally, cheerful chatter from the kitchen staff drifted over. They weren’t slacking off—it just sounded like friendly, pleasant conversation, giving off a good vibe.
